Hubert looked up as the bell over the door jingled. He smiled when he recognized who had entered.

“Hey girl! What’s going on?”

“Hey,” Damian replied. “I need to talk to you about something.” She glanced around the store. Seeing she was the only one there, she plopped down on the couch.

“Sounds serious,” Hubert said, joining her on the couch. “What’s wrong?”

Damiana stared at her hands, unable to meet Hubert’s eyes. “Sparrow was telling me about something Rhiannon found. At the lake.”

“Is this about what I think it is?” Hubert asked slowly, staring at Damiana. “Please tell me it isn’t.”

“I’m afraid it is. She found it. I don’t know how, it sank! You saw it, too! I don’t know what to do!” Damiana put her face in her hands.

“My word. I never would have thought it would come back to haunt us. Literally.” Hubert leaned back against the couch. “What has she done with it?”

“All I know is she took it home. Sparrow said she really liked the little bear. I have no idea if it’s all still together or not. I think she was planning on keeping the bear out of the box. What are we going to do?” Damiana finally looked over at Hubert.

“We? This was your mess to begin with, honey, don’t forget that. I already tried to fix this once.”

“Hubert! You have to help me! I don’t know who else to go to!” she pleaded.

“Do we know if there is even anything happening? Maybe it lost its power in the lake, as it was supposed to. Have you talked to Rhiannon?”

“No. Not yet. I wanted to talk to you first. Do you really think maybe the power is gone?” she asked hopefully.

“I don’t know, dear. I think we need to wait and see what happens. You may want to talk to Rhiannon, find out if anything weird is going on. We can go from there.” Hubert shook his head. “What am I going to do with you?”

“It was so long ago. Maybe you’re right. Maybe it will be okay. I’m just worried, especially with Rick back in town. I don’t know if this will affect him or not. I’d hate to see what happened in Arizona happen here. He deserves better.”

“Well that is very magnanimous of you,” smiled Hubert.

“You don’t have to be snarky. I’m trying to be a better person, you know,” snapped Damiana.

“I’m just messing with you. Now, why don’t you go track down Rhiannon, and find out what’s going on? I have a painting I must finish framing before the customer comes in.”

“Okay. I’ll stop by after I talk with her.” They both stood up.

“You better,” said Hubert. “Now go on.”

Damiana smiled. “Okay, bye.”

It was a slow day at work, and Rhiannon was reading about the blizzard in the local paper, when a story about a car wreck caught her eye. She knew who Travis and Cody were, but didn’t know them well. The article noted that Travis had been killed, and Cody had been transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
